Today was a truly interesting overview of not only of what assistive technology is, but the amazing impact it can make, the doors and eyes it can open. In my experiences volunteering with the autism centre in the IWK and shadowing a speech language pathologist, I encountered some of the low and high level technologies we discussed in class. I hadn't realized how many and how often technologies could be used in the classroom, but often aren't.
It was really exciting to see the videos in Barbara's presentation, they were truly inspiring. It is frustrating watching kids in the classroom who are upset and frustrated themselves because they can't do the same work as everyone else. To give them the independence they crave would be a joy to everyone in the classroom, and prevent further feelings of disempowerment and loss of academic confidence.
